Proto St. Lo Runs Mocktail Mixology Workshop
On Thursday, March 13th, St. Lawrence hosted a Mocktail Mixology Workshop. The event, organized by STEM club Proto St. Lo, was an opportunity for students to learn about the science and art of mixology.
The presenter, Charlotte Turgeon, is a professional mixologist who owns MixoQuébec, a small mixology business, is the head mixologist at Le Bijou Salon Cocktails in Vieux Quebec and regularly offers mixology workshops.
During the workshop, Turgeon explained the history of mixology, talked about mixology in Quebec, and introduced the fundamentals principles of mixology (L'équilibre, Les techniques, Les aromates principaux, Les subtilités). After the presentation, there was a quiz competition on the science of mixology, as well as a contest where participants could compete to make the best mocktail. Charlotte Turgeon judged the drinks and declared student Will Nadeau to be the winner.
Turgeon was pleased to be able to share her knowledge with cegep students, mentioning that she would have liked to attend a similar workshop while still in school. Career opportunities, especially in the hospitality industry, are rarely discussed in school, she explained.
Proto St. Lo seeks to increase student engagement in the sciences by supporting students-led STEM initiatives. They encourage both theoretical and practical activities, and the mixology workshop is the kind of event they're looking to host more of. "It was a pleasure to see how science is everywhere, even in mocktails," says club president Merrick Marshall.
Thank you to Proto St. Lo's social initiatives team for organizing this event: Melek Redouane, Ana Maria Perilla Rodriguez, Léanne Langlois and Merrick Marshall.
