St. Lawrence Fashion Show a Big Hit!

The annual St. Lawrence Fashion Show took place on Saturday, March 22nd. Held at the new Quai 30 venue in the port, this sophisticated event drew large numbers of students, parents, and friends. The classy crowd came dressed to impress. Following a cocktail hour, the curtains parted and guests took their seats around a rectangular runway. On one end, there was a stage, on the other, a fabulous view of the city lights at dusk.

Spirits were high and anticipation higher as the planning committee took to the stage to introduce the show. The theme, as explained by student Marilou St-Laurent, was “where fashion meets music”. Programs promised a show divided into six parts, each comprising a selection of looks themed around a musical genre.

A violinist took to the stage to set the tone of the event. The classical theme was quickly joined by a blend of hip-hop tracks, provided by a DJ, who took over for the remainder of the show. The music transitioned from hip-hop into country, and then electro, with each genre serving as the backing track to a series of 10-12 looks modelled by students. The disco section was a mix of ‘70s and ‘80s fashion, and the country section full of cowboy hats, while the electro section featured macrame and mesh outfits. The crowd’s energy was palpable as they grooved along to the music and cheered on the models.

The first half of the show was followed by an intermission, and then attendees heard from the organizing committee about the fundraising aspect of the show. As usual, the event was for charity, this year in support of the Fondation du centre jeunesse de Québec (CJQ). The organizers spoke about the charity’s mission and what it means to them. Then, a large cheque was brought onstage, made out to the Fondation CJQ in the impressive amount of $11,200!

The second half of the show was built around rap, blues, and rock music. The rap tracks backed a series of streetwear looks, while the blues played behind a variety of oversized, mid-century styles. The rock ‘n’ roll finale featured a broad variety of looks using patchwork denim, stretch fabrics, spaghetti tanks, appliqués, and leather. Every model walked in both halves of the show, and it was impressive how each hairstyle was selected to work with two genres.

The show closed to thunderous applause, with models and committee members alike taking to the stage to dance, the former clad all in black. The audience joined in the dancing and clapping, celebrating a wonderful evening. It was a great show with a great cause. Congratulations to all!
