USports Champion Yves Sikubwabo Joins SLC Lions Coaching Staff
The St. Lawrence Lions Athletics Department is extremely proud to announce the hiring of Yves Sikubwabo as their head coach of their Cross-country program for the Fall 2017 season.
Native of Rwanda, Yves had to run 11 kilometres to school every morning, only to run back home in the afternoon which is where he learned his craft. Yves then moved to Canada, more specifically to Ottawa in 2010, where he attended Glebe high school and won the Ontario high school (OFSAA) gold medal in Cross Country and Track two years in a row.
He then joined the Guelph Cross Country running and Track teams in the Fall of 2012. He competed for the Gryphons for three seasons during which he won the gold medal at the 2012 Canadian Junior Track and Field Championships and the silver medal at the 2013 Canadian University (CIS) Track and Field Championships. During those three years, he also began transferring his passion of running with local youth by becoming involved with a local high school as a coach for their cross country team.
Yves move to Quebec City in the Fall of 2015, to join the ranks of the Laval Rouge et Or cross country track club, and to pursue his studies in Physical Engineering at Laval University. This past fall season was another one crowned with successes for Yves, winning first the Provincial University Cross Country individual gold medal in October, and then the USports National title in October.
Yves now want to get back into coaching to continue sharing his passion for running to young athletes and hopes build a very strong running program at St. Lawrence.
