Lions Repeat as Basketball D2 Conference Champions, Set Sights on Defending Provincial Title
The women’s D2 basketball team defended their RSEQ Northeast Conference championship title last weekend, defeating the Cégep de Chicoutimi Couguars 47-37 in a hard-fought final. This victory marks the Lions as back-to-back regional and conference champions, continuing their championship streak from last year.
During the tournament, the team opened with an 80–31 blowout against Shawinigan on Saturday morning, followed by a convincing 72–48 win over Sherbrooke later that afternoon. The weekend was not without challenges, however, as Emma Paquin suffered an ankle injury. Both Paquin and head coach Justin Robert remain optimistic that she will recover in time for the provincial championship.
In the final game, the Lions started slowly, struggling to find their rhythm offensively in the first half. However, they regrouped after halftime, tightening up defensively and regaining their composure to secure the win.
“Finishing second would have given us a spot in the provincial championship, but that’s not how we wanted to go into the competition.”
Justin Robert
Head Coach
Earlier in the season, Chicoutimi had handed the team its only loss, a narrow two-point defeat. Graduating student Charlotte Boulianne-Tremblay reflected on the team’s performance noting that three-point shooting, a key strength for the Lions, was less effective in the final compared to the regular season.
“Not our best! The final was a bit stressful. Nothing was going in but we played strong defensively to limit the damage.”
Charlotte Boulianne-Tremblay
Boulianne-Tremblay will pursue her academic journey studying Education at Laval University this September.
Following their conference win, Coach Robert gave the team two days of rest to recover before returning to practice on Wednesday to prepare for the provincial championship. The Lions will be entering the tournament as the defending champions.
The provincial championship begins Friday, April 17 at 10 a.m. at CEGEP Ste-Foy, with St. Lawrence facing the Cégep de Montmorency Nomades.
Congratulations to our Lions and we wish them the best of luck during the provincial championship!
