William Huang has been selected to receive a $120,000\u00a0<\/span>Schulich Leader Scholarship<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>to study Software Engineering at Universit\u00e9 Laval.<\/p>\n

A graduating student of CEGEP Champlain – St. Lawrence in Quebec, Huang will be entering university this Fall. He was nominated by a committee at the college for his outstanding achievements in science and extracurricular activities and received support from St. Lawrence teacher Martin Plante and his former employer at Creaform, Simon Gauthier.<\/p>\n

A total of 100 scholarships are being awarded – 50 engineering scholarships valued at $120,000 each and 50 science, technology or math scholarships valued at $100,000 each.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cWe are proud to celebrate the continued success of Schulich Leader Scholarships, the premiere STEM scholarship program in Canada. This group of outstanding students will represent the best and brightest Canada has to offer and will make great contributions to society, both on a national and global scale. With their university expenses covered, they can focus their time on their studies, research projects, extracurriculars, and entrepreneurial ventures. They are the next generation of entrepreneurial-minded, technology innovators,\u201d says program founder Mr. Schulich.<\/p>\n

Huang is passionate about technology and is in the process of launching a web development business, which he calls \u201ca lifelong dream\u201d. This scholarship will have a big impact on his university studies. \u201cWhen Universit\u00e9 Laval announced that I won,\u201d he says, \u201cit didn’t feel real.\u00a0It took a couple of days for this to sink in and to realize how this would change things for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

He\u2019s looking forward to what\u2019s in store for him at Laval next year and beyond. \u201cOn top of offering financial security that allows me to focus on my studies, this scholarship also gives me access to a vast network of entrepreneurial-minded individuals, from whom I can learn for my future goals.\u201d Huang hopes one day to run his own cybersecurity company. \u201cBoth the networking and financial support will allow me to invest in projects and businesses to create a difference in our society.\u201d<\/p>\n

Martin Plante, Huang\u2019s nominator and the coordinator of St. Lawrence\u2019s P.W. Sims Business Program, says the student succeeds both within and outside of the classroom. \u00ab\u00a0William is a student that goes beyond learning and doing work in class; he uses it to create more skills… and a business opportunity.\u201d This drive and initiative is what makes Huang a worthy recipient of the Schulich Scholarship. \u201cTaking things beyond what they should be, looking for help, and excelling at what you do is the mark of a true leader,\u201d says Plante.<\/p>\n
