Underdog Lions start playoffs with a bang
After a rather difficult regular season, the St. Lawrence Lions entered RSEQ division 1 playoffs in a very unfamiliar position. The 2018 playoffs mark a new opportunity to right the ship and revive the tradition of being the best in April for a sixth season.
Goal tender coach, Joe Côté announced the Lions 2018 playoff slogan, “Going further together is better than going faster alone”, with the players embracing the opportunity to challenge as underdogs scrapping for redemption. The Lions new playoff story was set to be written.
The Lions hosted St-Laurent in the first game of a best of three series on Saturday March 3rd at Ancienne-Lorette arena. Vincent Guy scored twice in the first period to make it 2-1 for the Lions. The Lions roared as they hit the ice with a strong early second period push. Alexandre Fortier and Edouard Normand made it 4-1 before the end of the second period.
The Lions took a 1-0 series lead before heading to St-Laurent to attempt eliminate their first-round opponents.
The Patriots did not want to loose their home game and be eliminated for the rest of the series. They scored and took the lead slightly before the end of the first period.
The Lions hustled during the second period and shot 14 times on Patriot’s goalkeeper but he was determined to keep his shutout. Early in the beginning of the third period, the Lions’ focus had them score the tying goal. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Nicolas Thibault stopped nearly 40 pucks to keep the team in the game and finally go to overtime.
Guillaume Ouellet was the hero of the game as he scored the winning goal during overtime!
